The reward

Last weekend, we decided to take the kids to the Melting Pot for a Valentine's dessert.  We knew they would never make it through a dinner there, but we figured that dessert was fast and cheap and something different since they got to use the dippers.  We learned that was the longest they would sit there and the chocolate had absolutely no effect on them when it came to naps!

Baby M started fussing so I took her out to the van while Daddy T and B stayed to pay for the food.  The following conversation took place between the 2 of them and I thought it was wonderful.  Bear in mind that the Melting Pot is a semi-quiet place and B's whisper isn't really a whisper, especially when he has a pressing question that he really needs an answer to.

B: Daddy, what's that?

Daddy T: It's wine.

B: What's wine?

Daddy T: A specialty drink.

B: Oh.  You mean you get it when you go poop?

Daddy T: (a little unsure of what to say) Yes, but only when you reach a certain age.

*I can only imagine the faces of those in the vicinity of our son who were overhearing this conversation!

What My Son Hears?

After teaching a piano lesson today, I told B to get his shoes on so we could get ready to go.  He obeyed and we piled into the van.  On our way into the city, B asked me where we were going.  I told him that we were running to a store to pick up a few things, eat lunch, and then go to the nursing home.  Out of those three things, what do you think B heard?

"We go eat lunch!"

I always suspected that his focus was on food, but now I'm convinced.  From now on, I'll know to leave food out of our rotation so that he'll be sure to hear all of the other instructions I give him.

Thinking Chair

I was sitting on the toilet seat watching the kiddos take their bath (and waiting for them to finish playing) when B, who was lying down on his back in the water looked at me.  The following conversation took place.

B: What's the matter, Mommy?

Mommy: Nothing, B.  Mommy's just thinking.

B: Oh....like Blue's Clues?

Mommy: (laughing) Yeah, like Blue's Clues!

Guess B thought that I was sitting on my thinking chair!  He cracks me up!

They say the cutest things...

B loved going to VBS at our church last week.  He had a blast.  It was definitely the highlight of his days and he'd wake up asking when he got to go.  Then, about every 30 minutes or so he would proceed to ask again.  When Daddy T would go to pick him up and B would walk through the door at our house, he'd proudly show me what they made and tell me what he learned and then....yes....tell me what he ate.  Sometimes I didn't really want to hear that part, but I realized it was a special thing for him to do!

On the last day, B came home and looked me in my eyes and said, "Mommy, they shut down VBS."  He was so sad!  I didn't know what to say.  I tried to explain to him what happened, but I still don't think he grasped it.  I'm so thrilled that he liked it and that it was fun for him and that he learned so much.  Too bad it "shut down!"

The Thoughts of Babes

It always amazes me now as B is talking more and sharing more of this thought processes with me.  It reminds me that he's growing up and he's looking like such a big boy. This morning, however, I couldn't help but crack up listening to his thoughts work their way out his mouth.

We were sitting at the table with my mother and he had asked her to make waffles.  (It's no secret that he likes Waffle House.  I don't really know why, except for the fact that it's at the end of our road and he sees it EVERY time we go down our road.)  Anyway, she made him some and then asked him if they were as good as Waffle House's waffles.  He said "no."  She asked him if she could work there because they were so good and he said "yes."  A little bit later, she put on her sun visor so we could go to the pool and B turned to her and said, "You have to put that on to go to work at Waffle House?"  No joke!  I couldn't hold back my laugh!

God loves...

One night before bed, I was reading a book and B wanted to read the Bible in bed.  He was holding his Bible and laying beside me while he read.  The next thing I hear is "God loves daddy, God loves B, God loves Sissy, God loves Suzzy, God loves Pop, God loves Mama, God loves Nanny R, God loves... and on and on.  Notice there was one person missing.  I said, "B, does God love mommy?"  He looked at me square in the eyes and said "no."

Words I Love

The sweetest words that I love to hear from this little boy is "Mommy, I love you too much!"  I think somehow he decided to change "so" to "too."  That's okay because I love it.  However, I quickly tell him, "B, you know what?  I love you too much, too, and I always will!"  Then I get those sweet kisses and bear hugs and I'm reminded that there's no greater job on this earth for me than being a mommy to my sweet (and not-so-sweet at times) kiddos.  I'm so thankful that I am able to be with my kids the majority of the time and watch them grow up and make lots of memories.  Sometimes in the midst of the everyday, mundane tasks, I forget that this is a gift to me from God so I need to cherish the days even when I think I'm going to pull my hair out.  They won't last forever.  Or so I tell myself!:)
